Potential downsides of sports watching

Although therapeutic values of sports can be great, too much of the experience brings some risks. Becoming overly attached to a team’s fortunes can amplify negative emotions when outcomes are unfavorable. Difficulties with emotional control might result in huge bursts of stress, which can overpower somebody’s life.

There are also too long sessions to consider. They can interfere with sleep, physical activity, or work responsibilities. Furthermore, online fan communities sometimes reinforce toxic attitudes (e.g., hostility toward rival fans). Too much involvement has the potential to create negative engagement in completely irrelevant discussions.

Treating wins/losses as entertainment, not personal validation, is one of the ways of avoiding such dangers.
